Un procès en « piraterie » à Rochefort en 1851-1852

En 1851-1852 se tint à Rochefort un étrange procès en piraterie dont le seul accusé était un coolie chinois. Il avait participé à une révolte sanglante à bord d’un bateau français en mer de Chine, en 1850. Le dossier du procès conservé au Service historique de la Défense de Rochefort (MR 3 O 503) permet de reconstituer cette affaire judiciaire peu banale, qui se termina par la libération du prévenu, mais qui éclaire indirectement une nouvelle forme d’esclavage.

ON TRIAL FOR "PIRACY". ROCHEFORT 1851-1852

An odd trial for "piracy" was held in Rochefort in 1851-1852. The accused was a Chinese coolie who had taken part in a deadly mutiny on board a french ship in the China Sea. The file of this quite unusual case is kept in the Archive Department of the Ministry of Defense where it can be consulted. The accused was released after the trial, but this episode says a lot about the exploitation of overseas labourers in the 19th century which can be seen as a modern form of slavery.
